Rory Snyder is the Director of Jazz Studies at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill and for 16 years was the Director of Bands at Homestead High School and Jazz Director at Santa Clara University. He earned a B.A. from UCLA and an M.M. from the University of Northern Colorado, and is in demand as an adjudicator, clinician and guest artist throughout the west. He served as the Northern President of the Music Association of California Community Colleges (MACCC).

Rory recorded his first CD as a leader, "New York Sessions" featuring Michael Wolff - piano, Wallace Roney - trumpet, John Patitucci - basses, and Victor Jones - drums.

He has recorded 5 album/CD projects with Dave Eshelman's Jazz Garden Big Band, and two with the Mike Vax Jazz Orchestra. He has appeared as a sideman with Johnny Mathis, Clark Terry, Ed Shaughnessy, the Smothers Brothers, Jack Jones, Vicki Carr, Bob Newhart, Don Menza, Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin, Bobby Shew, The Temptations, and many more.

Guitarist, producer and bandleader Steve Freund, praised by Rolling Stone for his "masterful, no-nonsense guitar work" has relocated to the West Coast following 18 years as one of Chicago's most respected musicians.

Widely sought after for his knowledge of and fluency in the Blues idioms, Freund has earned a reputation as one of the hottest players on today's blues scene. He served an unreproducible apprenticeship after leaving N.Y.C. In 1976, learning the role of second guitar behind Hubert Sumlin, Lee Jackson, Homesick James, Louis Myers, and many others. He spent two years working with Big Walter Horton and Floyd Jones, learning the deep blues and the idiosyncrasies that are part of the art.

In 1978, he became Sunnyland Slim's main guitarist, playing just about every gig with the piano legend until the time of his death. Freund became the consummate piano accompanist working with Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Walker, Henry Gray, Erwin Helfer, David Maxwell and many more.

The show will be a competition among WCS members for Best Song and Best Performance Awards for the night. Best Song of the evening receives studio time from Harwood Productions while Best Performer receives blank recordable CDs in jewel cases.

Anyone can perform on the showcase, but only WCS members are eligible to compete. Each participant receives written evaluations from qualified judges, or from their peers at the peer-judged events.

In August, each Competition location invites its Best Song winners to return for a playoff. The winners of these playoff events perform at the Songwriter Competition Finals held at the Freight & Salvage nightclub in Berkeley.

This event is presented by West Coast Songwriters, a Bay Area-based non-profit educational organization with more than 1,200 members.

The Alhambra Valley Band has been contributing talent and energy to the California Bluegrass scene since 1986.
Also known for award-winning original material and vocal harmony arrangements, this Northern-California-based ensemble of roots musicians is spreading the gospel

Lynn Quinones is an award winning songwriter and has been a champion of the Bay Area bluegrass scene for years. She combines a deep reverence for traditional music with the creativity and skill to experiment with new sounds and rhythms. The distinctive melodies in her compositions, her “ That’s what I’m talkin’ about!” rhythm guitar style, and her considerable vocal talent form the Alhambra Valley Band’s signature sound.

AVB’s co-founder, Jill Cruey, is a gifted fiddler with an impressive knowledge of bluegrass and old time music styles.

Mandolin player, Dan Large adds his own innovative touch to the AVB’s original material, singing lead or providing baritone harmonies for the bands highly regarded vocal “trio”.

Mitch Polzak is comfortable in styles from rockabilly to honky-tonk and provides the driving banjo sound for the AVB.

More than just a top-notch bass player, Bruce Campbell brings a sense of humor, fun and balance to the AVB. Bruce was just elected as a Director of the Board of the California Bluegrass Association.

The California Honeydrops were formed in November of 2007 playing in the subway stations of Oakland, CA. Playfully crossing genres from roots and blues to R&B and soul, The California Honeydrops’ sound is tied together by their unique instrumentation, soulful vocal harmonies, and a funky, good time -New Orleans style.

Digging deep into the traditions of American music, the California Honeydrops bring to the stage not only an unmatched level of musicianship and authenticity but also a funky good time that’s hard to beat. Ripping through classic material as well as their own original songs, The California Honeydrops will get any crowd on its feet, dancing and singing along.

Having accompanied artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Alvon Johnson, Dan Hicks, Jackie Payne, Del Ray, Donald Byrd, Mike Seeger, Ramblin Jack Elliot, and Maria Muldaur, band leader Lech Wierzynski has learned the tricks of the trade from some of the biggest names in American music.

Seth Ford-Young has been performing since 1989. His studies include Jazz and Classical music, with Jazz theory, performance and arranging under famed bassist, Ray Brown. Seth has performed with Tom Waits, Jelly Roll, Smith, Gail, and Sasha Dobson, Mark Growden's Electric Pinata, Tim Hesla Big Band, Graham Connah, Marcus Shelby Quartet (subbing for Marcus), Connie Champagne, Bishop Norman Williams, Hal Stein, Ben Goldberg, Myles Boisen, Morris Acevedo, Lucky Seven, D.J. Quest, B.J. Pappa, Tropical Caliente, Matt Clark, Donald "Duck" Bailey, Denise Perrier, Tommy Thomsen, John Schott, Spencer Day and more too numerous to mention.

Johnny Bones has been performing in the Bay Area Jazz scene since 1992. He has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Percy Heath, Eddie Palmieri and Nell Carter, among others.

The vibrant rhythm section of The California Honeydrops is fueled by the barrelhouse style of Oakland piano veteran Chris Burns (Albert Collins, Freddie Hughes, Maria Muldaur) and Ben Malament (Terry Reid, The Marvelettes, Dale Spaulding).

Originally from Baltimore and now based in sunny Oakland, songbird and solo uke-slinger, Tippy Canoe (Michele Kappel), made the switch from a 5-piece drum kit with the garage-pop princesses The Kirby Grips (Sympathy For The Record Industry), to a 4-stringed ukulele in 2003.

On her debut full-length album, “Parasols & Pekingese,” released in 2008 on Late Bloomers Works and recorded with her full band the Paddlemen, Tippy Canoe shows off her enchanting and dynamic sound. Her voice is a mixture of the 60's girl group sound and classic country with its own quirky nature shining through. Her songwriting highlights a variety of influences ranging from 20's and 30's acts like The Boswell Sisters and Jack Teagarden, to 50's and 60's performers like Brenda Lee and The Chiffons, and catchy post-punk bands like Squeeze and Blondie.

Tippy Canoe has shared the stage or completed coastal tours with artists including Martha Wainwright, Big Sandy & his Fly-Rite Boys, Mad Tea Party, and others. San Francisco shows Tippy Canoe a lot of love; she was included in an exhibition on the ukulele at the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art, featured in the first annual San Francisco Ukulele Festival, and aired on a segment of PBS’s Bay Area Arts program SPARK TV. Tippy Canoe also contributed original music to the animated children’s DVD “Music Time.”

Mikie Lee Prasad, hailing from Denver, Colorado and now in Concord, California, co-hosted the Monday Blues jam with the Steve Gannon band at Blake’s in Berkeley from early 2000- to October 2004 and hosted Acoustic Wednesdays at Blakes from July 2001- Janruary 2005.

Prasad has played a variety of gigs in the Philippines and England.
In addition to solo tours and tours with Maria Muldaur , Heavy Petting Zoo, Sugar Pie DeSanto and the Steve Gannon Band, Mikie has played most Bay Area clubs including Bimbo’s, the Great American Music Hall, Slim’s, the Boom Boom Room, and Bottom of the Hill.

LEGENDARY RADIO PERSONALITY, MUSICIAN AND HUMORIST, Master trombonist Mal Sharpe has been a much-admired and pivotal member of the San Francisco jazz scene for more than 40 years. In addition to leading his Dixieland jazz band, The Big Money In Jazz Band in gigs all over the Bay Area, Mal hosts a regular Sunday night show “Back On Basin Street” on KCSM/Jazz 91. He does commercials and voice-overs, gives interviews, writes books and is involved with a number of North Beach community projects. Mal made his name as a member of the legendary and ground-breaking "man on the street" comedy team, Coyle & Sharpe, in the 1960s. We're sure he spent his fair share of time at the Purple Onion in those days!

Mal Sharpe can be heard every Sunday at 9:00pm on KCSM FM's "Back on Basin Street".

Local revered guitarist Doug Wendt continues to enchant and stop audiences dead in their tracks, in the San Francisco Bay area. Wendt has brought a new depth of dimension to jazz with his original expressions in guitar. A music instructor and arranger, Wendt is well versed in the studies of Andres Segovia, Alirio Diaz and Narciso Yepes. Mastering the acoustic and electric guitar, his styles consist of Jazz, Classical, Folk, Blues, Spanish and Latin guitar. With his unique influences such as Joe Pass, Robben Ford, B. B. King and Albert Collins, Wendt is one of the truly gifted and crowd pleasing musicians of the bay area.

Mark Petrella brings over 25 years of experience in many varied musical stylings to Dangerous Martini. Petrella stirs the audience to lively foot tapping when he plays swing bass: His jazz lines demonstrate shrewd, stirring discernment; and he provides earthy, pulsing rhythms in Dangerous Martinis blues numbers. His facility, melodic wit and straight-ahead power match Mark’s inventiveness and versatility.

Ruben Salcido was born in Crockett, CA. He brings the spicy hot Latin flavor to the Dangerous Martini sizzling line-up. Finalist in 2001 USA Songwriting Competition Salcido's CD, "Sal Si Puedes" gives a delicious contribution to the world of Latin jazz. Salcido has studied saxophone with Joe Henderson, Mel Martin and John Purcell.
