If you haven’t heard Matt Eakle blowing audiences out of their chairs and onto their feet with the David Grisman Quintet, chances are you’ve never heard a flute dig this deep into the groove. After 20 years of playing “Dawg music” Matt has put together his own band - and the groove has just gotten deeper!

Matt Eakle, was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and has been active in the Bay Area music scene since the early 70s. Matt is probably best known as the flutist in the David Grisman Quintet. Matt played his first gig as a DGQ member in 1989 at Yoshi's in Oakland, with special guest Vassar Clements. "One of the nicest things about playing with David,” says Matt, “has been the opportunity to play music with his friends - Vassar, Tony Rice, Stephane Grappelli, Jerry Garcia, John Hartford, Mark O'Connor, Bonnie Raitt..."
Matt is featured on all of David Grisman’s Acoustic Disc quintet CDs and is a special guest on all the Garcia/Grisman CDs. "Flute Jazz”, an Acoustic Disc project of his own, is a collection of Matt's compositions and jazz standards in a trio setting. Matt performed with Linda Ronstadt in “Mas Canciones de Mi Padre”, and can be heard on Chris Isaak’s CD “Always Got Tonight”. Matt Eakle is the producer of “The Headwaters Project” CD, a compilation of music by different artists “inspired by or evocative of the wilderness” which raises money for non-profit groups fighting to save the California redwoods.

Alex Baum, has performed from Osaka, Japan to Orvieto, Italy playing acoustic stand up and electric bass guitar. Alex is in the Johnny Nocturne Band & is on all 4 of their Rounder / Bullseye discs. Alex helped produce & record their Blue Bucket discs "Blues Volume" & "Good To The Damn Bone", He has also toured extensively as a charter member of Dan Hicks & the Acoustic Warriors. Working in many styles, Alex has performed or recorded with: JAZZ: Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis,"Sweets" Edison, Dave Sanborn BLUES: Pinetop Perkins, Earl King, ROCK; Zero, Bob Weir, Clarence Clemonds, John Cippolina, Steve Kimock.

Jack Dorsey, a native New Yorker, settled in The San Francisco Bay Area in 1976. He has performed and/or recorded with artists Jimmy Witherspoon, Randy Crawford, Little Anthony, Johnny Griffin, Denise Perrier, Etta Jones, Jose Feliciano, The Coasters, and Doug Kershaw (The ragin' cajun). Jack has recorded movie and television themes in Hollywood and at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in Marin. For the last six years Jack has been working for The San Francisco Symphony's AIM Program bringing live music into the public schools.

Joey Edelman, a graduate of S.F. State in piano composition has been a S.F. Bay area musician for the past 25 years. Joey has played and recorded with many Bay Area music greats including John Handy, Jules Broussard, Martin Fierro, Vince Delgado and Jose “Chepito” Areas and other members of Santana.

Klezmer is irresistible Jewish music that originated in the Yiddish-speaking communities of Eastern Europe. Klezmorim played for simchas and rituals, bringing joy, hope, and richness to all who listened and danced. Today the Red Hot Chachkas blend klezmer with jazz, classical, and improvisation, creating an exciting and danceable sound.

The Red Hot Chachkas' sound swings, shakes, and serenades. Comprised of multi-talented performers on violin, clarinet, mandolin, accordion, bass, and drums, the group plays traditional Eastern European dance tunes, ranging from frenzied freylekhs to tranquil tantsn, plus original compositions, arrangements, and improvisions, building on the klezmer tradition and fusing with contemporary musical styles.

* Julie Egger has played the violin since the age of seven. As a teenager, she performed with the Long Island Youth Orchestra, which traveled all over the world, playing music. She received a Bachelor of Music in Education from Crane School of Music, where she studied with the Carnegie String Quartet and Ruth Iogha. Julie lived for nine years in Boston, where she performed classical, jazz, and liturgical music. She has performed with artists such as Stuart Brotman (of Brave Old World) in Finif, and Joshua Horowitz of Veretski Pass. She currently performs with The Red Hot Chachkas and performs free lance in the Bay Area as well. She teaches Klezmer music as well as classical and jazz to students of all ages and conducts workshops in Klezmer music. She also currently teaches at Marin School of the Arts. She is co-founder of KlezCalifornia, and received a 2003 individual Artist Grant and a 2007 Community Grant from Marin Arts Council to create a "Yiddish Folk Festival" in West Marin.
* Barbara Speed started on piano, her father's instrument, when she was nine. Flute soon followed, and she studied classical and baroque flute in New York and London through her twenties. In 1979, Barbara moved to Berkeley, took up saxophone with Kurt Bradford (former lead alto with Jimmy Lunceford). Barbara's fascination with that era of jazz led her to the clarinet, which she studied with Jim Russell. A gig playing a jazz suite with the Westwind International Folk Ensemble led to participation in a klezmer suite, which in turn led Barbara to the Red Hot Chachkas. She also plays in jazz-combo Caledonia Quartet, and Memphis Soul and Rhythm and Blues band Juke Joint.
* Michael Arrow has played and taught drums and percussion in Marin County for many diverse groups. He has performed and recorded with the late jazz great Larry Vanuchi, the Marin Symphony, Sausalito Jazz Trio, the jazz group As Is, the College of Marin Orchestra, Christopher Smith, and Sam Andrew (of Big Brother and the Holding Company). He also plays in jazz-combo Caledonia Quartet, and freelances with various jazz and blues groups.
* Tony Phillips got his first mandolin as a law school graduation gift from his parents, to their subsequent and lasting regret. Now he also plays octave mandolin, electric mandolin, mandolin-banjo, guitar, fiddle, and whatever other stringed instruments he can buy, borrow, or steal. He played in several Bay Area bluegrass bands, and performs oldtime, contra-dance, jazz and swing, Cajun, and other traditional American music with the Jubilee American Dance Theatre. He formed and leads the Instant Klezmer Mandolin Orchestra, and is involved behind the scenes in the Jewish Music Festival, KlezCalifornia, and San Francisco Festival of the Mandolins.
* Breck Diebel holds a MA degree from San Francisco State University, and BM from Berklee College of Music in Boston. He grew up playing guitar, and has been playing bass since 1980. He plays double bass and electric bass, and has performed within a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, salsa, Cuban son, folk, rock, and Andean and Latin American folk. Breck has taught bass at Blue Bear School of American Music and managed a large music store in San Francisco. You can also hear Breck with Barb and Michael (and Stuart Rabinowitsh) in jazz-combo Caledonia Quartet.
* Aaron Seeman, accordionist and newest member, is a player with virtuosic technical skill. His repertoire includes, but is not limited to, 70's rock, Broadway, klezmer, classical, country, Sousa marches and even a polka or two. However, his specialty is alarmingly accurate accordion recreations of classic punk songs. His 2005 release, "Fresh Duck for Rotting Accordionists" is a note-for-note re-make of the entire first Dead Kennedys album!

UC Davis jazz director Delbert Bump has established himself in the musical world as a performing artist playing piano, keyboards, and jazz organ. He has released seven CDs and a number of other recordings representing various aspects of his unique performance and compositional style.
Bump has written for big bands, combos, television, and radio, and he has received numerous awards. His output as a composer with respect to the jazz literature is significant. Currently, he maintains a full schedule as a performer, locally and nationally; as a teacher at Solano Community College and UC Davis; and as the leader of an organ trio, a latin sextet, and an organ-driven big band.

T Moran is a working drummer in the San Francisco Bay Area. He currently plays w/ the "Daniel Castro Band" ( Blues) and "The Contemporary Jazz Orchestra" ( Modern Big Band ) and also freelances with whomever possible. He has been a member of the following Bands: Starship, Coldblood, Pacific Brass & Electric, Frank Biner & the Soul Patrol, Jim Chappell, Chris Camozzi, The Delbert Bump Organ Big Band, Delbert Bump Organ Trio, Will Porter Allstars, Scott Bros., Count Floyd. He has performed w/ Billy Preston, Gregg Allman, The Coasters, The Drifters, Percy Sledge, Eddie Money, The Namedroppers, Al Wilson, The Diamonds, Barbara Lewis, and shared the stage with many other artists such as; Stef Burns, Mark Russo, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Frank Bey, Joe Henderson, Volker Strifler, David K. Greg was born and raised in El Sobrante, CA. The show will be a competition among WCS members for Best Song and Best Performance Awards for the night. Best Song of the evening receives studio time from Harwood Productions while Best Performer receives blank recordable CDs in jewel cases.

Anyone can perform on the showcase, but only WCS members are eligible to compete. Each participant receives written evaluations from qualified judges, or from their peers at the peer-judged events.

In August, each Competition location invites its Best Song winners to return for a playoff. The winners of these playoff events perform at the Songwriter Competition Finals held at the Freight & Salvage nightclub in Berkeley.

This event is presented by West Coast Songwriters, a Bay Area-based non-profit educational organization with more than 1,200 members.

Mark has also been featured in the opening act on major tours with artists like Van Morrison, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Los Lobos, Charlie Hunter, Vince Gill, String Cheese Incident, Chris Isaak, Omar Sosa, Duane Eddy and the Neville Brothers.

Jeff Magidson, renowned for his searing guitar work, was born in San Francisco into a family of musicians.
He attended U.C. Santa Barbara, U.C. Berkeley, then in 1983 went to study in France for a year,where he was asked to join a 'Jug Band' and travel Europe playing acoustic Blues and Jazz. His studies ended and his career began.
In 1990 he started performing solo as a one man band, playing simultaneously the bass drum, high hat, dobro, and harmonica. In 1993 he started a trio under the name 'John Doe' and began playing his own compositions, a mix of Blues, Folk, and Funk.
Three albums, two kids, and ten years later, his wife, Isabelle, and he decided to move the family to California. They've been here since 2004 and perform together under the name 'Duo Gadjo'
Jeff also plays rhythm guitar with the Hot Club of San Francisco and is music director at Red House Studios in Walnut Creek, California.

LED KAAPANA on tour from Hawaii!!

Led Kaapana - slack key guitar/ vocals

Led Kaapana's mastery of stringed instruments, particularly slack key guitar, and his extraordinary baritone and leo ki`eki`e (falsetto) voices, have made him a musical legend. He has been thrilling audiences for more than 40 years. With easy-going style and kolohe (rascal) charm, he has built a loyal corps of Led Heads from Brussels to his birthplace on the Big Island of Hawaii. Recognition by his peers earned Led Grammy nominations in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

As teenagers, Led and his twin brother Ned and cousin Dennis Pavao formed the Hui Ohana, one of the hottest groups of the 70s and 80s and now legendary among Hawaiian musicians. The 70s saw the blossoming of the Hawaiian Renaissance, and Hui Ohana was a key part of that return to traditional Hawaiian culture and music. Young Hawaii Sings Old Hawaii, the title of their first recording, was also their statement of purpose.

The group produced 14 best-selling albums and made countless hundreds of live appearances.
Led later formed another trio, I Kona, releasing 6 albums with that group, including Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, Jus' Press. He has also released a number of solo albums, including two Na Hoku Hanohano Instrumental Album of the Year winners, Lima Wela and Black Sand. Ki Ho`alu, Hawaiian Slack Key, Grandmaster Slack Key and Force of Nature (with Mike Kaawa) received Grammy nominations.

While recording for Dancing Cat Records, Led produced a number of solo projects, duets, and a project with Allison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, and other bluegrass legends called Waltz of the Wind. He has worked with Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins, and many other Nashville notables.
Back at home, he has shared his talents on recordings with most of Hawaii's top talents, including Aunty Genoa Keawe, Barney Isaacs, The Ho`opi`i Brothers, Melveen Leed, the Pahinui Brothers, Amy Hanaiali`i, and countless others.
In 2008, Led formed his own recording company, Jus' Press Productions, and released his Force of Nature CD, with 12-string virtuoso Mike Kaawa. The album earned a Grammy nomination in 2009 and won Led and Mike the Favorite Entertainer Award at the 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.

Led tours the US extensively and has also appeared in Belgium, Germany, Canada, Japan, and Tahiti.

The California Honeydrops were formed in November of 2007 playing in the subway stations of Oakland, CA. Playfully crossing genres from roots and blues to R&B and soul, The California Honeydrops’ sound is tied together by their unique instrumentation, soulful vocal harmonies, and a funky, good time -New Orleans style.

Digging deep into the traditions of American music, the California Honeydrops bring to the stage not only an unmatched level of musicianship and authenticity but also a funky good time that’s hard to beat. Johnny Bones has been performing in the Bay Area Jazz scene since 1992. He has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Percy Heath, Eddie Palmieri and Nell Carter, among others.

The vibrant rhythm section of The California Honeydrops is fueled by the barrelhouse style of Oakland piano veteran Chris Burns (Albert Collins, Freddie Hughes, Maria Muldaur) and Ben Malament (Terry Reid, The Marvelettes, Dale Spaulding).

With Delmark recording artist and blues heavyweight Steve Freund Band Wendy has performed at the San Francisco Blues Fest and the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Boogie Woogie Queen, Sue Palmer is no stranger to the spotlight. Equally at home with 12-bar blues, boogie woogie, swing, jazz or country, Sue is a successful band leader in her own right. She leads her award winning band, Sue Palmer & the Mood Swing Orchestra.
For five years, Sue was the musical partner of blues diva and recording artist Candye Kane. They toured France and most of Europe, including Scandinavia, Greece, and Turkey.
Under the moniker Sue "Beehive" Palmer with Candye Kane and the Swingin' Armadillos, she appeared on the Penn & Teller Show and the Roseanne Show, where Sue acted as the talk show band leader (1999).

LEGENDARY RADIO PERSONALITY, MUSICIAN AND HUMORIST,
Master trombonist Mal Sharpe has been a much-admired and pivotal member of the San Francisco jazz scene for more than 40 years. In addition to leading his Dixieland jazz band, The Big Money In Jazz Band in gigs all over the Bay Area, Mal hosts a regular Sunday night show “Back On Basin Street” on KCSM/Jazz 91. He does commercials and voice-overs, gives interviews, writes books and is involved with a number of North Beach community projects. Mal made his name as a member of the legendary and ground-breaking "man on the street" comedy team, Coyle & Sharpe, in the 1960s. We're sure he spent his fair share of time at the Purple Onion in those days!

Mal Sharpe can be heard every Sunday at 9 p.m. on KCSM FM's Back on Basin Street.

Janet Popesco Archibald holds the position of Solo English Horn with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. A San Francisco native, she attended
the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music & received her Bachelor & Master of Music degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Janet served as Principal Oboe of the San Francisco Opera's touring affiliate, the Western Opera Theater Orchestra, for 5 national tours. For
many years she served as Principal Oboe of the Lake Tahoe Summer Music Festival and for 22 years she was a member of the faculty of the San
Francisco Conservatory's Preparatory/Adult Extension department. She also has been a member of the music faculty at both San Francisco State
University and the University of CA at Santa Cruz.
Her recording credits include the soundtracks for the films 'Once Upon a time in Mexico', 'Ricochet' 'Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' & 'Into the Wild', and the Grammy-nominated cd recording of Gluck's opera, 'Orphee &
Eurydice' with the San Francisco Opera.

Howard Kadis is a classical guitarist, lutenist, and mandolinist who has been an active performer in the Bay Area for the last 25 years. He received his BA and MA in music from Cal State Hayward where he studied with James Bertram.

He has also been a frequent performer with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, most recently in the 1998 production of Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea. He has also appeared with the San Francisco Symphony, the California Symphony, the San Jose Symphony, the Joffrey Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet orchestras, and the Sante Fe Opera Orchestra. He has appeared as a guest of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and has performed numerous solo and chamber music concerts.
