David Cronin and Jami Fender formed the duo/band FenderCronin in1992. David is an exceptional fingerstyle guitarist, and has studied with masters of the genre including Alex De Grassi, Ed Gerhard, and Peppino D’ Agostino. Jami has performed as a lead singer and rhythm guitarist since the ‘60s. Their voices and guitars, often accompanied by Richie Beltran on guitar/harmonica/vocals, blend in beautiful and unusual arrangements.
FenderCronin has released two CDs of originals, “Letting Go of Gravity” and “Fine Time of Life”. Their music combines elements of folk, rock, pop, and jazz. They also cover songs from an eclectic range of artists. Tonight they will be performing many songs they have never previously done at Armando’s.

Richie Beltran has shared his talents with many bands over the years, but he is a powerful solo writer/performer as well. Along with “normal” gigs, he has been especially active in support of veterans’ groups and Native Americans. He is currently working on his first CD.
Mark Lemaire is a superb fingerstyle guitarist/composer/singer-songwriter. A full-time recording engineer, Mark helps many local artists with their projects, including some of the finest classical ensembles in the Bay Area. As a performer, he has opened for top artists including Tracy Chapman, Maria Muldaur, Steve Seskin, the Dixie Dregs, and Stephen Grossman.

Twenty six year old country-rock troubadour Elliot Randall is an emerging musical stylist who writes songs that "defy his tender years. He seems to have done it all and has the required levels of hurt and angst that far older songwriters take years to experience." (Americana UK)

Randall's discerning style has garnered him comparisons to the likes of Ryan Adams, Guy Clark and Gram Parsons and Jackson Browne.

Indicative of his southern upbringing, his dynamic song work traverses the Americana landscape; from greased up two-steps to outlaw country to hearty ballads, Randall puts it all together in his own brand of American music.

Shortly before the release of "Take The Fall", Randall's powerful voice and sublime lyrics caught the ear of San Francisco classic rock station KFOG's Renee Richardson. "When I first heard Elliot's beautiful, almost haunting songs, I was immediately drawn in. I was surprised to learn that he was only in his twenties. But that's good for us, we have so much more of [him] to look forward to". The station, a champion for the best in burgeoning Bay Area talent added Randall's original track, "How To Get Old" to their annual "Local Scene" compilation cd, added it to their summer rotation and he was chosen to kick off the corresponding summer concert series in a live, on-air performance.

Elliott has opened for Wynonna Judd, Steve Miller, Lyle Lovett, Hayes Carll and Paul Thorn among others.

The Nice Guy Trio creates a sound that is both intimate and reflective of their contrasting yet complimentary musical backgrounds, and always with an emphasis on spontaneity.
In concert they navigate through a uniquely diverse collection of original compositions and songs from folk traditions all around the globe, from jazz to klezmer to Balkan dance forms, to calypso and beyond.The Nice Guy Trio has played venues big and small, from Jazz at Chez Hanny and the Café Royale, to The Great American Music Hall and the Yerba-Buena Garden Festival.
In 2008 they were awarded the Best Jazz Band award from SF Weekly after completing an exciting "Root Exchange" residency at the Red Poppy Art House which featured the playing and compositions of a different guest artist alongside the trio each month.
Guests included clarinetist Ben Goldberg, Sameer Gupta on tabla, electric-guitarist John Schott, and more. The series culminated in a nine-piece finale concert at the De Young Museum.
This year the Trio embarked upon a second "Root Exchange" series held at the Community Music Center and included guest singer-songwriter Katy Stephan, saxophonists Evan Francis and Kacey Knudsen, Balkan music specialist Peter Jacques, pianist Myra Melford, and percussionists Faisal Zedan, Dave Mihaly and Michelle Simon. Their debut record, Meet The Nice Guy Trio, is now out on Porto Franco Records and includes many of the guests from their first Root Exchange season.

The show will be a competition among WCS members for Best Song and Best Performance Awards for the night. Best Song of the evening receives studio time from Harwood Productions while Best Performer receives blank recordable CDs in jewel cases.

Anyone can perform on the showcase, but only WCS members are eligible to compete. Each participant receives written evaluations from qualified judges, or from their peers at the peer-judged events.

In August, each Competition location invites its Best Song winners to return for a playoff. The winners of these playoff events perform at the Songwriter Competition Finals held at the Freight & Salvage nightclub in Berkeley. From that final, three winners are chosen to perform at the 28th Annual CREATION:CRAFT:CONNECTION Conference at Foothill College in Los Altos September 13 and 14 in front of numerous publishers, producers, booking agents, hit songwriters and record company executives.

This event is presented by West Coast Songwriters, a Bay Area-based non-profit educational organization with more than 1,200 members. West Coast Songwriters hosts Songwriter Competitions each month in these nine locations: Berkeley, Santa Clara, Hollywood, Manteca, Petaluma, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo and Sebastopol (Sonoma County).

The Ray Obiedo Group is made up of some of the finest Jazz musicians the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. With its heavy influence of African grooves, Brasilian and Caribbean rhythms and a hybrid of pop & soul, a traditional Latin Jazz sound is always at the core of the ensemble. A unique aspect of the group, is it’s ability to always incorporate a variety of Funk and R & B groove elements into its various arrangements.

Contemporary jazz composer and guitarist Obiedo had an eclectic musical background during his youth, spent in the Bay Area of San Francisco.
In his illustrious career, Ray has recorded and/or toured with Sheila E, Pete Escovedo, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Lou Rawls, Johnny “Hammond” Smith, Julian Priester, Mark Soskin, Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley and Rose Ann Diamalanta.
Obiedo's solo compositions have also attracted acclaim, and saw interpretations from Sheila E., vocal group The Whispers, and percussionist Pete Escovedo. Parts of this work have appeared on film soundtracks, most notably Michael Caine's “A Shock To The System” and Richard Gere's “Internal Affairs”.
Ray has recorded a clutch of solo albums for Windham Hill Jazz Records and leads his own band, The Ray Obiedo Group.

Trapped In A Rumor is an East Bay Improv Company that focuses on performing theatre games. If you've ever seen 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' then you know what we're about. For those of you that are unfamiliar with that show, let us explain "short form improv" to you a little bit. The short form style typically is comprised of brief, unrelated scenes or games, but is almost always fun. Games are played for a few minutes, then the characters, locations and objects finish with that game, and the performers move on to a new game, with new suggestions for the scene and characters.

The performances of Trapped In A Rumor are generally PG-13, unless otherwise advertised. A smart and sassy audience makes for a great show, as we take our inspirations from you, so when you come to see us perform, be prepared to make suggestions, to laugh and to have the time of your life! Shadee appeared as Jazz singer Blue Williams in the Lorraine Hansberry Theater’s 2005 production of the dramatic-musical play “Blue”. As stated by the San Francisco Chronicle Theater Critic Robert Hurwitt: “...Nona Hendryx’s gently swinging and blues-ballad melodies are sung with expressive delicacy and fine Phrasings, especially by Shadee Rashada as the title character... Rashada sings beautifully...”

Brett “King” Cosby has performed in the roles of a drummer/sideman and band leader in the Bay Area since 1978 with some of the most influential musicians of Northern California, covering nearly every style of music and every type of venue. He has performed with members of Santana, Tower of Power and the legendary Pharoah Sanders.

Jack Pollard is an accomplished vocal stylist with 40 years of performance experience. Jack performed with a vocal quintet that opened for The Whispers, and shared the bill with The Temptations. He specializes in Jazz, Blues, and R&B and interweaves the styles to create a performance that appeals to a wide audience. His exceptional vocal talent, versatility and on-stage charisma have endeared him to many fans. Delight in the sweet influences of Lou Rawls, Johnny Hartman and Nat King Cole.

Doug McKeehan, trained in classical piano, has been playing jazz in the Bay area for the past 20 years at such venues as the Great American Music Hall, Yoshi’s, and Herbst Theater, as well as steady engagements at San Francisco’s Fairmont, Park 55, and the Convention Center Marriott hotels. With Brett Cosby he co-produced the King Cosby Group album “Journey to the One”. Doug lives in Oakland, where he runs his own recording studio and keeps looking for that hit right around the corner.

John Christensen, professional trumpeter and music educator for 32 years, currently resides in Martinez, California. He performs and teaches all styles of music ranging from classical to modern contemporary jazz. John has performed in opening act shows for Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, Ray Charles, Joe Williams, Lou Rawls, Nancy Wilson and Earl Kluh to name a select few.

Greg Reginato was born and raised in El Sobrante, CA. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He has studied guitar with Michael Gibbs in New York and has participated in numerous New York recording projects. He has performed with Norbert Statchel, Matthew Echol, the Bay Area Jazz Ensemble, the Rory Snyder Quintet, the Diablo Valley College Night Jazz Ensemble, and the Diablo Valley College All Star Combo.

Joe Kaline has been freelancing on saxophone in The Bay Area since 1980. He's been a member of The DeSotos, The Scott Brothers, The Sax Maniacs, and Los Mocosos. He has shared stages with his good friends Norbert Stachel, Paul Hanson, Lincoln Adler and Steve Webber. Currently he can regularly be found fronting his own bands The Sons of Emperor Norton and The Beat Meters, as well as in the sax section of The Chabot and Solano College night bands.

Steve Webber has been playing the bass for over thirty years. He has been an active member of the bay area music scene since the 1970's. Playing with Bennet Friedman's woodwind ensemble and the Award winning SRJC big band, Steve has had the pleasure of performing with Jack Sheldon, Art Farmer, Mel Martin, Steve Smith,George Graham,and Don Menza.
While working in San francisco Steve has done shows with Buddy Guy and Jr. Wells,Chuck Berry,Bonnie Rait,Carlos Santana and Huey lewis and the News.

Iter plays original material in a post-bop style plus “Greek jazz” – a mix of traditional Greek instrumentation and Greek folk dance musical foundations. It provides the band a platform for group improvisation and crowd-pleasing rhythmic patterns.

The Iter concept, developed by Anastos, is a musical journey down the Roman road, or iter, of jazz.

LEGENDARY RADIO PERSONALITY, MUSICIAN AND HUMORIST,
Master trombonist Mal Sharpe has been a much-admired and pivotal member of the San Francisco jazz scene for more than 40 years. In addition to leading his Dixieland jazz band, The Big Money In Jazz Band in gigs all over the Bay Area, Mal hosts a regular Sunday night show “Back On Basin Street” on KCSM/Jazz 91. He does commercials and voice-overs, gives interviews, writes books and is involved with a number of North Beach community projects. Mal made his name as a member of the legendary and ground-breaking "man on the street" comedy team, Coyle & Sharpe, in the 1960s. We're sure he spent his fair share of time at the Purple Onion in those days!

Mal Sharpe can be heard every Sunday at 9 p.m. on KCSM FM's Back on Basin Street.

From age 5 to 18, Sheilani studied classical piano with the Vallejo Conservatory of Music. Building upon her classical training, she eventually added guitar and singing to her repertoire and started playing at various coffeehouse open mics while living between Northern and Southern California for the next 9 years. She has participated in a handful of vocal-based projects and with the Contra Costa Songwriters Project performing at Bay Area venues including the Bazaar Café, the Coast Café, Ashkenaz, and the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts. More recently, Sheilani has rekindled her love for jazz standards accrediting that to her mother playing Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Bennett records. She plays on occasion with the Dan Damon Trio and the Kurt Ribak Trio at venues around the Bay Area including The Baltic, The Two-Bird Café, The Miramar at Half Moon Bay, and is invited to sing at jazz services at the First United Methodist Church in Point Richmond.

San Francisco Bay Area-based Beth Kohnen is known for the powerful deep tone she brings to the harmonica and the evocative feeling of her vocals. A passionate student of the great Chicago blues players, Beth's harmonica style often brings to mind the memory of Big Walter Horton. Beth's 1930's Chicago speakeasy style appeals to blues purists as well as jazz enthusiasts.

Beth came to the 'City by the Bay' in 1976. For many years she played gospel piano and harmonica in a small Berkeley church. Her love of blues drew her out to the clubs and by 1997 she was a frequent guest artist of Grammy-winning blues guitarist Steve Freund at the Ivy Room in Albany.

She went on to guest with blues legends Rusty Zinn, RJ Mischo, Wendy DeWitt, Birdlegg, Levi Lloyd, Robert Watson, Volker Strifler, and Eric Lindell.

In 2001 she recorded her first CD, "Hard Hearted Woman", at Fantasy Records. In 2005 she recorded her second CD, "Knee Action" and received booking at the coveted Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco.

In October 2008 she flew to Europe and played blues in Paris and in the south of France.

Beth can currently be seen on the harmonica film documentary "A Pocket Full of Soul".

Katy Lawrence is a native Californian, the daughter of two career music teachers. Katy has studied violin with Harriet McNeil, Doris Brill, and the renowned Hungarian violin prodigy Kato Havas; and had vocal instruction with Bob Boyle, Helen Stephens (Director of the Berkeley Inspiration Choir), and the late Judy Davis, whose students included Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Mary Martin, and Grace Slick.

Katy is known throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as an excellent and versatile club musician; her sultry rock, blues and gospel stylings are reminiscent of the great Janis Joplin.

During the 1980s Katy toured with various bands in the U.S. and Europe- including “Promise”, “Electric Wood”, “Dawn Patrol”, “Mogul”, “The Flow”, “2 Xtreme”, “Dennis & the Sharks”, “Triton”, and “The Katy Lawrence Band”. She recently opened for Eddie Money at Konocti Harbor. She has also performed with the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra, and the New Approach Chamber Orchestra.
Katy has been a professional singer for commercials such as Ampex, Sir Gawain Hair Products, Cormark Trucking Co, Blue Chip Casinos, Cadence, and others.
She earned the Joey Award 1999 from the San Jose Film and Video Commission for performance in the Original Score of the Discovery Channel’s “Preemies: The Fight for Life”.
Her published CD’s include “Katy and Dell Anytime”, 2004, and “The Katy Lawrence Band”, originally marketed as “Triton”, 1997.

Dell E. Burchett was born and raised in California, and educated in the East San Francisco Bay Area.
He studied jazz guitar in the seventies with Mr. Stan Kenton. As a young man he performed in “Rock Island” with Marc Bonilla; also the Maguire Band and the Greg Kihn Band.
In the last couple of years he has performed with Eddie Money in Los Angeles, and with Paul Rodgers of Queen and Bad Company at the Superbowl party in Arizona. He opened with the Katy Lawrence Band for Mike Campbell at the Imperial Ballroom in Fullerton, CA; and performed with Peter Shroud of Sheryl Crowe Band at NAMM 2009. In addition, Dell has opened for Jefferson Starship, Rick Springfield, Rick Derringer, Ronnie Montrose, Journey and Elvin Bishop. He performed on the sound track for the Warner Brothers T.V. series “Coast Guard”.

Mark Stanley returns to give a one time only performance after an eight year hiatus. Mark will be performing at Armando's in Martinez with the Katy Lawrence Trio. as well singing several numbers on his own. Mark had been a well known singer - songwriter in the Bay Area music community for 30 years, releasing six albums of original music between 1984 and 2000 . In 2001 he contracted bacterial meningitis which resulted in having his fingertips amputated and ending his career. He now gives private guitar lessons to over 40 students along with teaching reading and math at Burton Valley Elementary school in Lafayette.
